In this article, we will explore the Aspect ratio parameter of Midjourney and discuss in detail how to change Aspect ratio in Midjourney so that your images are in the ratio you want.
By default, in MidJourney your images are generated square, but you may want images in different aspect ratios according to each platform and your needs. We told you how you can change your aspect ratio through the zoom out feature and the best part is that your image remains the same as before.
We will tell you how to apply the –ar (aspect ratio) parameter and how many ratios there can be and how you can execute it in Midjourney prompts so that your images are in the ratio you decide.

What is Aspect Ratio?
In simple words, an aspect ratio is a simplified representation of the width to height of an image. Rather than specifying dimensions in pixels, it conveys the relationship between the width and height ratio of an image. For instance, an aspect ratio of 1:2 means the height is double the width.

Some Common Aspect Ratio
When you apply aspect ratios you will realize that you want to generate a landscape or a portrait.
Landscapes and portraits are opposite to each other in ratios the landscape version is used for YouTube Thumbnails which is 16:9 and the portrait version for reels which has the standard ratio of 9:16. Here are a few examples of common aspect ratios that you can apply.
What is the Midjourney’s default Aspect Ratio?
When you submit the basic prompt to generate an image in midjourney, midjourney generates a grid of 4 images which are of 1:1 ratio and all the images present in it are also of 1:1 ratio so that means the grid and All images are square by default. In the next step, we will explain how to change aspect ratio in Midjourney.
How to Change Aspect Ratio in Midjourney?
There are 3 methods to change the aspect ratio in midjourney, the first method is the one you will use the most and is used by all professionals and beginners. So let’s see what these 3 methods are,
1st Method: Using –ar parameter
This is the best method and also the most common. When you give your prompt to midjourney, at the end of your prompt you use the parameters to create your image as per your requirement. There are many parameters that you will use.
One of which is the –ar parameter which is used to change the aspect ratio in midjourney. To use it you can add –ar 16:9 and space to whatever aspect ratio you want to keep at the end of your prompt. Just example,
2nd Method: Using Custom Zoom
We use this method whenever we have already generated an image but we do not want to change the image but want to change the aspect ratio.
For this you get an option “Custom Zoom” below the generated images, click on it and you can change it by using the –ar parameter at the end of your prompt or by changing the aspect ratio.
Note: As of now the zoom feature does not work for Midjourney V6, it only works in v5.2 and midjourney Niji and other versions. And it is not necessary that your image should not change even a bit but there can be a slight difference.
3rd Method: Using Remix Feature
This is last but not least; with this method you can also change the aspect ratio of already generated images, to use it,
Simply you have to go to your Midjourney setting. To go to settings enter “/settings”,
Then you will find the option of “Remix Mode” in your settings, tap on it to enable its use.
Now you are ready to use it. Next to your images, you will see a small symbol of Remix Mode and when you click on it, a prompt box will open, then you can change your aspect ratio using the –ar parameter.
Aspect Ratio Limits in Midjourney Models
However, Midjourney is developing itself with time and pushing its boundaries but each model of Midjourney has its limitations regarding aspect ratios.
That is, in midjourney v5 the ratio of landscape to maximum width is 14:1 and in portrait the maximum tallness is 1:14.
But if you talk about v4 then it was 2:3 and 3:2. You may have learned that each model of midjourney has its limitations.
Note: It is not necessary that whatever ratio you command Midjourney will be the exact ratio you will generate but there are a lot of improvements with this time.
Conclusion
This article detailed how to change aspect ratio in Midjourney and how you can use the “–ar” parameter to change the aspect ratio of your images as per your need.
There are 3 methods we have discussed here that you can use and each method works. The default ratio of midjourney is 1:1 which is square and its default dimensions are 1024*1024 pixels. By understanding the constraints and limitations, you can fine-tune your prompts to achieve the desired visual outcomes.
